The frightened children play games in the clammy underground storeroom while they wait for her. The roaring wind rises and rises, then suddenly everything is silent until "with a ferocious roar, the twister strikes." The stormy chalk-like illustrations are filled with wild movement against the dark sky as people fight the wind, shout and scream and try to help one another. The devastation of the twister is shown, but the tender reunion of the mother with her children and the reassuring theme that life goes on after a disaster make this realistic picture book a good choice for reading aloud.
