Maple Moon (Print-Fiction). Crook, Connie Brummel and Cameron, Scott. Stoddart Publishing Co. Ltd. (GDS), 1997. unp. ISBN 0-7737-3017-6 ($18.95 hdc.).

(I/M) Based on two traditional legends of how sap for maple syrup was discovered, this lavish picture book tells the story of Rides the Wind, a young Missisauga Aboriginal boy whose deformed leg keeps him from playing with the other children in the clearing. It has been a hard winter and food is scarce in the camp. Rides the Wind wanders into the forest and after seeing a squirrel drink the liquid coming from a maple tree, he decides to taste it himself. Once he tastes the sweetness of the liquid, he collects it and takes it back to his people. At first, the other members of the tribe do not believe him; however, once they taste the sweet syrup, they realize that it will save them from starvation. Scott Cameron, whose attention to detail captures the harsh climate as well as the hardships and the emotions, illustrates this affecting story. The book is a good choice for reading aloud to groups, and will also be useful in curriculum units featuring North American Aboriginal tribes.
