Counting and Symbolizing (Video). (Math Monsters Series). Math Monsters, Inc. (MGR), 2000. 15 min. Dup. order no. V625.
The Monsters are invited to help Cousin Digit do an inventory of fish at his fish store. Because the fish are moving around, it is difficult to get an accurate count. A variety of counting strategies are explored to help the Monsters come to understand one-to-one correspondence. Their first attempt is to actually draw pictures of the fish on a piece of paper to represent those in the tank. Another attempt involves the use of colour tally marks. Once the exact number of fish is determined, the Monsters explore ways to symbolize the information. Then, the Monsters go on a field trip to a museum where they learn how other cultures and peoples who lived in earlier times symbolized their numbers.

The Monsters decide to plant two gardens, each with the identical number of monster melon plants. When the seeds are delivered, the Monsters are out collecting gardening tools. Aunt Tulips delivered two piles, each containing the same number of seeds but one pile is stacked high, while the other is spread out. The Monsters argue about which pile has more seeds, and then they proceed to develop strategies to discover the truth. This provides an opportunity to explore number conservation and one-to-one correspondence.

School Bus Safety (Video). TV Ontario (MGR), 1997. 5 min. Dup. order no. V533.
(CAN) School Bus Safety is a series of five short programs that gives Pre-Kindergarten and Elementary Level school age children important basic safety tips for riding the bus. Titles in this series include the following:
Don't Be Loud
Don't Pick Up Things
Keep Hands Inside
Never Throw Things
Ten Giant Steps
Each segment begins and ends with a "bus safety song" that reinforces safe behaviour when riding a school bus. Two hosts, Patty and Joe, present the tips, adding fun to the learning process. The programs encourage school bus riders to keep the noise down. They suggest that riders should move well away from the school bus after they get off. This will allow the driver to see them clearly and, if they need to cross the street, make sure they are doing so safely. Patty and Joe point out that objects thrown in the bus can obstruct the driver's vision or hurt someone. They encourage children to keep their hands inside the bus, instead of hanging them outside the windows. If children drop things on the way in or out of the bus, Patty and Joe say they should refrain from picking them up. The driver may not see the action, and the children could get hurt.
