By focusing on integrating students with special needs into a physical education class, this resource illustrates how to adapt several activities to the disability. The special needs covered include attention deficit, autism, deafness, visual impairment, brain injury and other health-related disabilities. In addition to background information on each of these disabilities, information is provided on adapting physical activities such as dance, aquatics, team sports, individual sports and winter sports to the student's special needs. A chapter on wheelchair sport is also included. Black-and-white photographs and drawings are used to illustrate some of the activities that have been adapted. An index is included.

This all-in-one resource provides a well-developed and research-based, skills-progression approach to teaching quality physical education classes. Three hundred and sixty-six lesson and unit plans are given for the areas of fitness, lifetime activities such as badminton, dance and golf, and team sports such as basketball, soccer and softball. Each of the areas provides information on goals, motivation, lesson sequence, review and assessment. Line drawings are used to illustrate the key points of each lesson. As this is an American resource, the information is geared towards United States curriculum standards, but most of the lesson ideas can be adapted to the Saskatchewan curriculum.

The enclosed CD-ROM contains assessment rubrics, portfolio checklists and tournament charts along with handouts for many of the sports.

(CAN, I/M) The traditional games of the Northwest Territories Dene are profiled in this video. Emphasis is also placed on the importance of these games to preserve Dene culture. The video looks at five of these sports in detail while the print resource gives step-by-step instructions on how to play several traditional games. Photographs and drawings are used in the book to illustrate the games under discussion.

Upbeat music, fun and contemporary dance routines are all combined in this video to re-energize students. Included on the tape are four 5-minute workouts and two 10-minute workouts plus, at the end of each segment, a brief message concerning the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The dance routines can be used at any time or in any space.

(CAN) This resource promotes a very positive attitude about women's hockey through photographs of players in action. The book offers ideas for skill development and proper equipment. There is also a section on today's stars that can serve as excellent role models for beginning players. The layout of the photographs, sidebars and easy-to-read text make this an inviting resource for students. An index is provided.

Lacrosse: The Creator's Game (Video). Magic Lantern Communications Ltd. (MGR), 1994. 25 min. Dup. order no. V547.

(CAN, I/M) This program is a documentary on lacrosse, the oldest organized team sport in North America, played by aboriginal peoples before Columbus came to America. It explores the history of lacrosse and its spiritual significance to Canadian aboriginals, their generosity in sharing lacrosse with non-aboriginals, and the period during which they were excluded from playing lacrosse on the professional circuit. Interviews with modern lacrosse players and aboriginal leaders are interwoven with archival footage and photographs of the aboriginal teams that played in England for Queen Victoria. It features the Powless family, a Mohawk family renowned in the world of lacrosse, and Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto on The Lone Ranger. "Silverheels" gained his nickname from his prowess as a star on the lacrosse field.

Manon Rhéaume: Woman Behind the Mask (Video). National Film Board of Canada (NFB), 2000. 47 min. Order no. C9100 066 ($39.95).

(CAN) In 1992, Manon Rheaume became the first woman to play professional hockey. The video provides an excellent portrayal of the trials and tribulations that Manon went through to accomplish her dream. Her later role as goalie for the women's Olympic team has been an inspiration to many women in sport.

Planet Health: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum for Teaching Middle School Nutrition and Physical Activity (Print-Non-Fiction). Carter, Jill, et al. Human Kinetics Publishers, Inc. (HKB), 2001. 523 p. ISBN 0-7360-3105-7 ($66.95 pbk.).

Although designed as a curriculum guide for an American program, this resource does provide some excellent ideas that can be used to support Saskatchewan's curricula for physical education and wellness. The book provides a common sense approach to steering students towards an active and healthy lifestyle. Through practical lesson plans, teachers will be able to achieve the goals of increasing students' physical activity level, decreasing their television viewing and improving their eating habits. The program can also be integrated across the curriculum into math, science and social studies. Figuring out the fat content of sample foods is covered in math, while foods for energy are dealt with in science, and the effect of advertising on the fast food industry is examined in social studies.

Through the use of stop-action colour photographs and step-by-step instructions, this resource is an excellent teaching tool to help unravel the mysteries of golf. Virtually all elements of the game are discussed and related to the needs of the junior golfer. Following an examination of the basics about equipment and rules, each chapter concentrates on a particular part of the game such as the swing, the short game or putting. Each of these segments also includes several drills that will assist with improving the skills needed to play the sport. An index and a glossary are included.

Students who have an interest in soccer will be able to obtain several good ideas from this resource. The colour photographs done in a step-by-step fashion highlight the drills and skills very well. Topics such as kickoff, ball control, playing defense, on the attack and goalkeeping are covered. Each topic includes several drills that will assist the coach and player. This is an excellent resource that will encourage students to practise and learn the basics.

This is an all-in-one resource that students will enjoy browsing. The book is organized by sport disciplines such as track and field, aquatics, racket and ice sports. Virtually every sport from shot put, to golf and skateboarding is covered in this concise book. The history, rules, strategies, techniques and equipment of 127 sports are explained using a readable text and excellent illustrations. An index is included.

Teaching Elementary Physical Education (Periodical). Human Kinetics Publishers, Inc. (HKB), Published quarterly - ISSN 1045-4853 ($92.02).

Although published by Human Kinetics, this journal indicates that it is the "independent voice of elementary and middle school physical educators." Released on a bi-monthly basis, each issue provides the latest information related to child development, teaching methods, curriculum developments, assessment and professional issues. The articles are illustrated with photographs and drawings. The list of references given for each article indicates a degree of scholarship. The advertising by Human Kinetics aside, this is an excellent journal for physical education teachers.

(CAN) This program illustrates the many exciting ways that physical activity can provide personal challenge and satisfaction. Each segment focuses on a different activity, and introduces the children involved. Segments feature young people who participate in mountain biking, an all-girl rodeo, dressage, kayaking, trampolining and karate.

(CAN, I/M) Portraits of children participating in various competitive pursuits introduce some not typically seen, such as lacrosse and ballroom dancing. Viewers will see that competition can take place on a thinking level, as in chess, and they will observe competitive skills such as strategy, teamwork, practice and motivation. Segments also feature young people on a synchronized swim team and those meeting the challenge of participating in a triathalon. Children in this program discover the satisfactions of healthy competition, goal-setting and achieving!

(CAN) Children exhibit their aptitudes for exploration as they demonstrate teamwork and self-confidence. Activities provide an outlet for their love of the outdoors and their affinity for science, nature and adventure. Segments encourage children to chart new courses and to connect with their environment. Scenarios feature young people who demonstrate high rope challenges and elements, junior gardeners at the Royal Botanical Gardens, children involved in orienteering, a trail maintenance team that works to preserve and protect the environment, and the president of a community nature club.
