(CAN)  While this resource may appear to be written for the law profession, the layout and format makes it very useful as a teacher resource.  The expanded table of contents make it very easy to locate specific and brief descriptions related to most areas of employment law.  Topics such as job applications and human rights, hiring, equity in the workplace, dismissal without just cause, and severance packages are covered.  The book provides a very good look at employment law across all Canadian provinces.  A table of case studies allows for easy access to examples that support the ideas being discussed.  An index is included.

Using interactive worksheets and very practical advice, this learning resource assists students in identifying their skills and exploring their career options.  Career planning, résumé writing, and interviewing skills are a major component of the book.  While the book is American, the content is relevant to the Canadian situation as well.

(CAN)  This learning resource has been designed to assist Aboriginal people in making wise career choices.  It uses the circle as the core mechanism to create a level of self-awareness that assists with career directions.  The concepts and activities can be adapted for use by any student.

The Quick Job Search: Seven Steps to Getting a Good Job in Less Time.  3rd ed.  (Print-Non-Fiction).  Farr, J. Michael.  JIST Works (UTP), 2002.  62 p.  ISBN 1-56370-836-1 ($4.95 pbk.).

Short, concise, easy-to-read, and an excellent overview describe this useful resource.  As students follow through each of the steps, they will identify their skills, define an ideal job, write effective résumés, improve their interviewing skills, and learn the importance of follow-up activities.  Checklists and samples are used throughout the book.  The American information will need to be supplemented with Canadian data.

(CAN)  According to legend, the Shamans who predicted the arrival of the white man and the near destruction of the Aboriginal people also foretold the resurgence of the Aboriginal people seven lifetimes after Columbus.  This is the time of the seventh generation.  This series showcases the excellence of young Aboriginal achievers in various fields including arts, entertainment, music, business, politics, sports, medicine, science, and technology.  Each show features two young people from Canada’s three distinct Aboriginal groups:  Indian, Inuit, and Metis.  They discuss their chosen field, how they got there and why they like it.  Resource Minutes include websites, sources for scholarships, and other useful information from HRDC Canada.

(SK)  The first part of this program is an upbeat, student-orientated production with the positive message that there are career opportunities for youth at home, in Saskatchewan.  The second part is aimed at employers and industry and looks at the challenges and solutions for youth employment.

VECTOR (Video Exploration of Careers, Transitions, Opportunities, and Realities)  (DVD).  Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE), n.d.  No order number is required.  ($20.00).

(CAN)  The Canadian Foundation for Economic Education has produced several career resources and VECTOR is the most recent addition to their Virtual Resource Centre.  The four compact discs in this package offer virtual visits to over 120 workplaces through video vignettes that are four-six minutes in length.  Students can see people in their workplace as they discuss their career choices with passion.  The profiles can be accessed via the industry sector, interest, essential skills, income levels, and education.

This learning resource was mailed to Saskatchewan schools during March 2004.

Workplace Housekeeping  (Video).  (Safety Care Series).  Safetycare Inc. (SCI), 1993.  12 min.  No order number is required.  ($235.00).

The benefits of good housekeeping in the office and the industrial workplace are stressed in this video.  An examination of good and bad practices is given along with tips on how to avoid accidents caused by poor housekeeping.
