(CAN) It is estimated that over 80% of jobs are found through the hidden job market. Knowing how to access this potential pool of jobs can be frustrating, but this resource takes much of the guesswork out of the process. Following a general discussion about resumés, interviews, and job search strategies, the majority of the book focuses on individual firms and organizations. Each firm’s contact information is given along with a brief description of what it does. There is also a comprehensive listing of recruiters and Internet resources that can be useful during the job search. An index is included.

This is the latest version of Career Explorer: CX Online. Previously recommended in the Career and Work Exploration section of the Practical and Applied Arts bibliography, this new edition now contains a teacher section. Included are suggestions for activities in many curricula areas on how to integrate career development into classroom lessons. While most of the information has been Canadianized, teachers will still need to supplement Canadian data for the American references.

(SK) This video and guide are part of Saskatchewan Labour's Ready for Work resource series. Senior high teachers and post-secondary instructors who are preparing their students for the workforce will find this video resource informative and useful. Young people need to know their rights as well as their responsibilities for fair and equitable workplaces. This video resource examines The Labour Standards Act and the role it plays in helping to maintain and promote fair workplace practices in Saskatchewan. This act sets the minimum standards in Saskatchewan workplaces for overtime, work schedules, meal breaks, minimum wage, holiday pay, and terminating employees. It is important to young people as it defines the workplace practices under which many of them will work (or employ others) as they enter the workforce for the first time.

Based on the book of the same title, this three-part video series provides a good overview to students who wish to improve their career development prospects. Each of the programs provides background information and uses scenarios to explore effective communication skills, the ins and outs of interviewing, and how to set and achieve realistic goals.

This video does a very good job of providing tips on how to acquire jobs that students really want. Resumes, interviews, and the importance of proper dress are focused on as well as topics such as company research and dealing with co-workers.

The teacher’s guide provides several practical activities and fact sheets to reinforce the concepts in the video.

(SK) Put together by the Aboriginal Representative Workforce Council, this kit contains a wealth of career development information of interest to students. In addition to the inclusion of resources such as the Blueprint for Life/Work Designs, there are pamphlets and brochures from various provincial and federal agencies outlining educational opportunities, employability skills, entrepreneurship, and job search skills. The main focus of the kit is the teacher facilitator’s guide that provides lesson ideas related to several role model posters included with the kit. The activities were written to meet Saskatchewan Learning curriculum objectives from K to 12 in most subject areas.

Copies of this kit were distributed to band and community schools. The kit is not available for purchase, but schools may borrow a copy from the distributor.

(CAN) Divided into five modules, this resource examines job preparation, job maintenance, and personal safety. Planning and proactivity projects are also included. This comprehensive package is aimed at developing core career competencies. These competencies include the knowledge, skills, concepts, attitudes, and behaviours necessary to be successful in acquiring and maintaining a job. The modules have been designed in Alberta with the requirements of individuals with learning difficulties in mind. Teachers in Saskatchewan will be able to use portions of the resource to support certain aspects of the curriculum.

The first three modules were recommended and listed in the Career and Work Exploration section of the Practical and Applied Arts Bibliography in 2003.
