(CAN, WNCP) This mathematics resource consists of a student text and a teacher’s package. The units progress sequentially and logically, each focusing on concepts from one of the five strands. Problem solving is integrated within each unit. Lessons are well organized including before, during, and after sections, with specific learning outcomes identified in the teacher’s guide.

Opportunities to actively involve students in exploring mathematical concepts are present in this resource. The teacher’s guide includes suggestions for extra support and extra challenge. Mental math, estimation, and strategy reinforcement may be found in sidebar sections of the student text. Reflection activities encourage students to communicate new understandings, and to make real world connections.

A CD-ROM is included with the teacher’s resource package. It consists of a set of software utilities in pdf format containing all of the components of the teacher guide. In addition, it provides editable assessment, practise, and testing sheets.

Teachers using this program as a resource need to consider how selected activities help to achieve Saskatchewan’s provincial curriculum learning objectives.

Using a variety of instructional strategies and hands-on exploration experiences, this resource provides a practical support to first grade teachers as they plan mathematics instruction throughout the school year. Organized by strands, each chapter identifies specific numerical understandings and literature-based lessons and activities that specifically target the identified mathematical concept. Activities encourage students to solve problems using a variety of methods, and to communicate their reasoning in both verbal and written form. The author encourages the use of ongoing assessment to record students’ mathematical capacities, comfort level, strengths, and limitations. She offers many examples of open-ended questions to facilitate this informal assessment. Although the curriculum does not advocate teaching the strands in isolation, this guide provides support for presenting mathematics concepts and managing classroom instruction. Teachers will need to ensure the activities selected correlate with mathematics learning objectives.

A curious mouse, Caroline, wonders how long it will take before her mother can come and read her a story. More questions ensue throughout the day. “How long until lunch?” “How long until the moon comes out?” As she waits for each event, Caroline creates her own understanding of time. One minute is the time it takes to paint a long stripe. Fifteen minutes is the amount of time needed to dig a big tunnel in the sand. Twenty minutes is the length of time needed to make a long daisy chain. Finally, Caroline asks how long her mother will love her. The loving response indicates that not all time can be described in minutes. Soft watercolour illustrations suitably portray the gentle nature of this story.
