(SK) When Amira immigrated to Canada from Egypt with her young family, she had big dreams for her new life here. Years later, following her divorce, she found that she could not travel home to Egypt because of an antiquated Egyptian law that prevented Egyptian women travelling without their husband’s consent. She regarded this law to be in direct violation of her human rights and decided to fight it through her art. Her work called The Veiling of Isis was commissioned by the United Nations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the UN exhibition in Durban, South Africa, Amira met the Dalai Lama who inspired her to continue to use her art to advocate for humanitarian causes. Two years later the Egyptian law was changed. Amira believes that this shows the power of art.

The Corporation, Part One: The Pathology of Commerce (Video). (The Corporation Series). Big Picture Media Corporation (MGR), 2004. 58 min. VHS/DVD - Dup. order no. V2759. Teacher's Guide for series - Order no. G2759 ($4.62 loose-leaf). Expires August 31 st, 2011.

(CAN) Based on Joel Bakan’s book,The Corporation, this program examines the “nature, evolution, impact, and possible future of corporations.” Like the Church, the Monarchy, and the Communist Party in other times and places, the corporation is today’s dominant institution. In the mid-1800s, the corporation won the status of legal “person” and with a personality of pure self-interest in its single-minded drive for profit, created unprecedented wealth. Effects of corporate activity on the physical world and the people “external” to it are responsible for countless cases of illness, death, poverty, pollution, exploitation, and lies. The prognosis is not good for human beings, the environment, democracy, or our planet.

(CAN) This program examines the issue that if corporations own everything, who will stand up for the public good? In the 1760s, the enclosure movement fenced public grazing lands so they could be privately owned. Everything on the planet seems to be available for exploitation. Disasters can be profitable; for example, as the twin towers collapsed, gold traders doubled their clients’ money. Young children are current targets. Corporations own the song, “Happy Birthday,” patents on plants and animals, and the next disease.

(CAN) This program documents the corporation’s indifference to democracy over the last century in many areas of the world. The high-stake struggles that face grass roots movements are detailed as they battle this dominant force of our time. The program reveals the patterns of American corporations such as IBM, General Motors, FORD, and Coke working with and profiting from Nazi Germany to present day Bechtel attempting to privatize Bolivia’s water system. There are still victories where small persistent voices grow large and become powerful enough to stop huge corporations that are attempting to take power and choices away from not only individuals and communities, but governments as well. Excellent examples of positive activism such as Bolivians defeating Bechtel Corporation’s attempt to privatize their water system are included. The series includes revealing interviews with CEOs and top executives, as well as professors, economists, journalists, and a filmmaker. Vintage footage, television clips, and other visuals enhance the production.
