(SK) This resource provides information on visual artists who are available to give workshops or presentations to Saskatchewan schools. It offers black and white photographs of the artists and their work. Sample agreement forms, fee structures, and recommended procedures are also included in the manual. The intent of the directory is to provide schools with a mechanism to facilitate direct interaction between artists, students, and teachers. Included are an index of artists and their addresses by region and an alphabetical list of artists. Drawing on Artists was distributed free of charge to all Saskatchewan schools courtesy of CARFAC (Canadian Artists Representation/Le Front des Artistes Canadiens) during the 96-97 school year. A limited number of copies are still available.

It is based on a questioning strategy illustrated by Geri Jacques, an art educator at the Mackenzie Art Gallery as she acts as a tour guide for the exhibition entitled The Sacred Earth: Photographs by Courtney Milne. (CAN) This package of four videos and a teacher's guide was organized to complement Barry Duncan's second version of Mass Media and Popular Culture, but can also be used independently. Forty short program excerpts were carefully selected from a variety of sources and range in length from 90 seconds to 12 minutes. The videos are organized into five thematic groups:

  1. Seeing Ourselves: Media and Representation -- Video 1 questions the media's roles and responsibilities in affecting social change.
  2. Selling Images and Values -- Video 2 examines issues of persuasion in the media.
  3. Our Constructed Worlds: Media Environments -- Video 3 looks at how the media tend to create separate worlds in the pursuit of marketing products and services.
  4. The Global Citizen -- Video 4, Part 1 looks at how our political responsibilities are shaped by media influences, and how we respond to these messages.
  5. New and Converging Technologies -- Video 4, Part 2 glances at likely future developments of the Information Age, inviting viewers to consider how these technologies may influence the evolution of society.

(I/M) An excellent resource for exploring world music, this comprehensive third edition of Worlds of Music describes and analyzes the indigenous music of various cultures, including North American Aboriginal, Indonesian, East Aboriginal, African, Eastern European, and Japanese people. (The chapter on Africa is new and the chapter on Eastern Europe has been revised for this edition.) Included for each cultural group are additional reading and listening selections. The book details characteristics such as the instruments, dominant rhythms, and tonal qualities of differing cultures, and provides maps, scales, diagrams, and black and white photographs. It includes a table of contents and an extensive index. The compact disc or audiocassette package may be used independently to raise awareness of various kinds of world music. Each selection is cross-referenced to the text. Most of the music was recorded in the field by authors.
