This is an updated version of the previously listed 1992 edition. This comprehensive text is divided into the following themes: "Organisms and Ecology," "Evolution and Mendelian Genetics," "Molecules of Life," "Diversity of Life," and "Plant Systems and Animal Systems." The authors have tried to emphasize the process and development of biological knowledge in addition to the knowledge itself. The book is well laid out with chapter summaries, suggestions for study focus, terms and concepts, and review questions. The coloured diagrams, photographs, charts and graphs will appeal to students. Included are a table of contents, detailed glossary, and an index.

Boreal Forest Watch (Print-Non-Fiction). Barrett, Rock, et al. Complex Systems Research Center (PKC), n.d. pgn. varies. No order number is required.

Boreal Forest Watch is a comprehensive, educational outreach program of the Boreal Ecosystem Study (BOREAS) designed for students in Grades 9-12. This program introduces students to the techniques of field sampling; data collection, analyzing, and reporting; and to the use of remote sensing data. Through this work, students assess global change and global warming and how it may affect the Canadian boreal forest ecosystems. The data collected will be used to build a long-term database for future global change studies. This program allows students and teachers to have a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning science. The Boreal Forest Watch training and resources are only available though a Boreal Forest Watch workshop. The training component will include an intensive three-day weekend workshop (requiring one day of release time) at Prince Albert Provincial Park. Based on Stephen Hawking's book, this CD-ROM looks at the various beliefs of the universe from early times to today. This excellent book explores the human body's immune system, showing ways in which the body can respond to disease. The text explains how the body typically responds when invaded by foreign viruses, bacteria, and allergens. The role of the mind in immune system repair and healing is also explored. The use of computer graphics and electron microphotography is outstanding. Included are a table of contents, glossary, and an index.

This is a reference encyclopedia on CD-ROM. It includes a "Who's Who" of famous scientists, and information categorized by mathematics, physics, chemistry, and life science. There is also a motivational quiz master. An index allows searching by topic. Cross-referencing and hypertext links, and a well-designed interface make this an excellent reference resource. The users can select to have the text read to them. This CD-ROM will make student research interesting and enjoyable.

(CAN) In the southwest of Japan near the city of Fukuoka, there lies a tidal mud flat. It is at this mud flat that thousands of birds stop during migration to feed and/or mate. This CD-ROM looks at the inventions and discoveries that have had a dramatic effect on the world, from ancient times until today. Transportation, communication, uses of materials, agriculture, science, and other areas are explored. The graphics are excellent. This resource uses an encyclopedia approach; the information is good but little critical thinking is required. This program is excellent for developing technological literacy.

(CAN) Grizzly bears have lived in the rainforest of the Khutzeymateen Valley, just south of the Alaska Panhandle, for thousands of years. Students gain a rare glimpse at the intimate behaviours of these bears in their wilderness homeland. The program also focuses on their adaptation and interaction to other species in the rich ecosystem. This precious and small habitat, however, was almost lost to the chaotic ruin of clear-cut logging. Students will gain an understanding of the real pressures from outside forces on the creation and maintenance of such spaces.

(CAN) This program is a visit to the Kurshimoto Marine Park in the south of Japan. This program is a showcase for shrimps and the reproductive habits of the spiny lobster.
