The Cage

This is the true account of a 16 year old Jewish girl's survival in the Lodz, Poland ghetto and in Auschwitz. When her mother is taken from them, Riva and her brothers support each other in their attempts to overcome the hunger, fear, and illness of life in the ghetto. Separated from her family in Auschwitz, Riva is aided by prisoners who are willing to risk personal recrimination to help her. This is an easily read, moving account of kindness and courage triumphing over cruelty and despair. See also: Daniel's Story.

Call My People Home

(Video). McNabb and Connolly (MGR), 1990. 23 min.

(CAN) An adaptation of the poem by renowned Canadian writer, Dorothy Livesay, the video focuses on the Japanese-Canadian internment during World War II. During the war, the government forcibly uprooted over 22,000 people of Japanese descent from the West Coast, 75 percent of whom were Canadian citizens. The film tells the story from ten perspectives and so reminds viewers that the internment affected individuals in different ways. The text is included in the guide. Supporting print is available. Available only from MGR, and only after August, 1997.

Canada's Coming of Age 1939-1945: Canada Remembers Educational Kit

(CAN) This kit includes: a six-part National Film Board video series on three cassettes, a 22-minute video, Canada Remembers Holland, a six-minute video, Canada Remembers 1939-1945, four full-colour posters, an 80-page colour magazine, and a teachers' guide providing suggestions for questions and activities. The kit provides interesting information about Canada's role on the world stage, women's entry into the work force, social, economic, and demographic changes as a result of the war, and the development of a Canadian identity.

Definitions, worded for ease of comprehension, are presented within entries in order of their familiarity or frequency in Canadian usage, making the dictionary easy to consult. An added feature of this dictionary is its encyclopedic element. A section dealing with speaking and listening projects contains suggestions for preparing and delivering speeches, debates, and multimedia projects. (CAN) Close Ups is an anthology of short stories by Canadian authors noted for their writing for young adults. Each of the 17 stories deals with a moment or event of life-changing importance-birth, death, divorce, abuse and prejudice. Although the stories deal with serious themes, they display humour and diversity and the characters grow and learn as a result of their experiences. This anthology is an excellent example of the short story genre, and it serves as engaging fiction that deals with relevant issues and experiences. This anthology could be used in modified classes.

Please note that several of the stories deal with mature themes and issues. Care should be taken to assure that the selections chosen meet the objectives of the themes and issues at each particular grade level.

Van Tassel's text is purposefully divided into four sections in order to reach manifold audiences. The first section is designed for college classes or independent workshops, and includes a complete study of 10 basic skills required to play Shakespeare's language truthfully. The second section is relevant for high school English or drama teachers and their students. The third section is geared towards professional actors and coaches, and the final section is a resource section containing a collection of exercises, an annotated list of selected film and video performances, a bibliography of some excellent books, a glossary of terms and an index. The material is detailed, well organized and clearly explained, and it will benefit both drama students and students interested in improving their reading of Shakespeare.

Coyote Waits

Leaphorn's investigation reveals the site of a lost fortune and involves the Navajo trickster, Coyote, who is always waiting and always hungry.

Crocodile Burning

Seraki is a high school student living in Soweto, South Africa at the end of the apartheid era. This novel describes Seraki's frustrations with his father's abuse of his mother and with his brother's incarceration because of his anti-apartheid work. When Seraki joins a theater company that travels to New York, he thinks he has left behind the crocodile, the play's metaphor for the political and social evils of the country. However, he soon learns that, as South Africans must fight the crocodile at home, he must also organize the theater company to fight the tyranny of the company's head.

Cry, The Beloved Country

Set in the apartheid era of South Africa, this is the story of Kumalo, an elderly clergyman who travels to Johannesburg to search for his family members. There Kumalo discovers the spiritual and moral problems of his family, who are representative of Black people's sufferings and the social decay of the country. This is challenging reading.
