Grolier Science Fiction: The Multimedia Encyclopedia of Science Fiction(CAN, I/M, WCP) This current Canadian dictionary contains 140 000 entries. The entries are direct, concise and are supported by illustrative sentences and points of usage. Alternative pronunciations are included. Many words are illustrated with small black-and-white line drawings and photographs. Canadian spelling and the Canadian cultural mosaic are reflected throughout. Particular attention is given to aboriginal people, including Métis and Inuit. In addition, this resource provides a guide to the dictionary, including information on spelling, pronunciation, parts of speech and idioms. (CAN, I/M, WCP) This thesaurus is distinctly Canadian. Entries are generally sensitive to cultural issues and groups and are clearly cross-referenced. The resource represents Aboriginal people both as a main entry and in an appendix that features a word list of Aboriginal groups in Canada. The word lists in the appendices are extensive and well organized. Please note that the Christian religion is featured more prominently than other world religions in this resource.

Each selection begins with a reproduction of a famous painting, and a quotation by a renowned author to set the tone for reading. The book has a visually appealing effect, and suggestions for responding to the selections, speaking and listening activities, and mini-lessons are found after each story, poem, or non-fiction article. There are also suggestions for critical thinking activities, and effective studying techniques. Also included are a glossary, an index of the fine art reproduced in the anthology, and an index of skills, authors, and titles. This saga of an African-American family spans over 200 years, from the capture and enslavement of Muhammad in 1743 to his descendants' emancipation following the Civil War, their marches of the 1960s, and their continuing sense of identity with their land today. This is a lengthy but easily read novel of one family's strength and commitment.

In this two-part video, narration is accompanied by scenes of the Greek landscape, its plant and animal life, and its ancient art works. Part One describes the origins and characteristics of gods, and the evolution of Greco-Roman mythology in later centuries. Part Two summarizes the stories surrounding heroic figures such as Perseus, Jason, Achilles, and Odysseus. It also relates the heroes' origins to political events and geographic locations. This is a lengthy video suitable for viewing in excerpts.

(CAN) An attractive and well-documented study, this book focuses on cowboys and their work on ranches in western Canada between the 1870s and the early 1900s. Numerous archival photographs, recollections, and articles depict daily and seasonal ranch life, rodeos, and the varied backgrounds and skills of cattle wranglers. This is an excellent source for research into one aspect of prairie settlement. The book includes a table of contents, lists of sources, and an index.

(CAN) Dariel Bosma lives in a small town where the school is rife with gangs and suspicions. Hoping to alleviate some of the problems, the town council overreacts and imposes a 9 p.m. curfew to stifle gang activity. Dariel and her cousin mobilize student opposition and, in the process, expose adult hypocrisy. Teachers should note that careful pre-reading is required before using this novel with a class, as the plot contains language and incidents that may be disturbing. The realism of this novel would make it a good choice for literature circles in a modified program.

(CAN) In 1938, shortly after the Kristallnacht attacks on Jewish synagogues and businesses, German state schools closed their doors to Jewish students and dramatically altered Jewish children's childhoods. This documentary drama is based on the author's personal experiences as a child in Nazi Germany. It explores changes in friendships, family interaction, and public incidents of hostility.

This is an interesting and easy-to-follow program that provides information about topics and media related to science fiction. Included are numerous film clips and stills, as well as written and spoken text about authors, books, films, and themes. A timeline gives historical information about science fiction from Utopia in the 1500s to the present. The program provides excellent links.
