Frozen in Time: The Franklin Mystery (28 min.) This excerpt from Dr. Owen Beattie's award-winning television documentary recounts the ill-fated British expedition, led by Sir John Franklin, that searched for a Northwest Passage during the 1840s. The main focus of the selection is a recent excavation of the graves of three sailors who died during the early part of the expedition. Beattie attempts to prove that their deaths, as well as the subsequent deaths of the others, were caused by lead-contaminated food.
The Land That Devours Ships (58 min.) This film excerpt traces a recent exploration of the undersea wreck of H.M.S. Breadalbane. The ship sank off Beechey Island in the 1850s while searching for survivors of the lost Franklin expedition. MacInnis and his team of experts use modern technology to examine and photograph the well-preserved shipwreck that lies beneath Arctic ice, and to recover an important artifact, the ship's wheel.
Man Alive: The Hero Among Us (30 min.) Many would agree that the truest heroes are those who risk their lives to save another person. What gives some people the exceptional courage to behave differently from the rest of us? In this episode of the popular series Man Alive, Peter Downie finds that heroes also satisfy deep needs of their own.

Where we are born, the language we speak, our parents' beliefs and personalities, our cultural history, all contribute to our identity. When this is never fully constructed or is shattered in later life, the effort to piece together an authentic identity can become an all-consuming obsession. Thousands of Jewish children were hidden away among gentile families at the onset of the Holocaust. This program features six of these children who are now dealing with dual cultural heritages. They describe why they were hidden, the effect of their upbringing on their religious perspectives, and their difficulties following the war. Most describe the healing process they experienced and how their present life reflects a need to deal with the past. See also: Tell No One Who You Are. Available only from MGR, and only after August, 1997.
