The Last Defender of Camelot

Read by Rene Auberjonois, this short story recounts the struggle of Launcelot and Morgan LeFay as they battle with Merlin in present-day England. These two have been kept alive magically for a thousand years, they now realize, for one purpose: to ensure that when Merlin awakes from his enforced sleep, they will be prepared to protect the world from his insanity. Also included on the cassette is the brief story, Horses of Lir, telling about the generations of men charged with the care of the god Lir's majestic horses. This is challenging material for mature students.

Last of the Curlews

This is the moving story of one Eskimo curlew's flight from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again. The death of his mate humanizes and dramatically illustrates the threats by hunters and by the changing environment that are factors in the bird's near-extinction.

The Last Pendragon: A Novel

Years after the death of King Arthur and the decay of the kingdom under brutal Saxon rule, Arthur's grandson, Irion, tries to organize warriors for battle to reinstate the kingdom. Aided by Bedwyr, the last of Arthur's knights, Irion hopes to succeed, not only in fighting the Saxons, but also in battling the distrust that his soldiers feel for him as the son of Medraut. This is an interesting but challenging version of the Arthurian legend. It is suitable for mature students.

The Last Roundup

(SK) In 1921, the Matador Land and Cattle Company closed its operation in the Coteau Hills of Saskatchewan and herded its cattle south. Graber's memories of his years as a young cowboy on the ranch include the daily and seasonal work of the cowboys, the camaraderie that developed among wranglers, and his experiences during the ranch's last cattle drive. The book includes maps, sketches, archival photographs, a cow country dictionary, and interesting inserts that include a last will and testament, an obituary, and a sourdough recipe. This is an easily read resource.

It encourages cooperation through inquiry and self-assessment, supports various learning approaches and fosters both individual and group activities.

(CAN) This is a large format pictorial tribute to hockey players from the late 1800s to the present. Containing numerous photographs and easily read text, this is a high interest resource suitable for reluctant readers. Included are a table of contents, members' honour roll (giving statistics), and an index.

A Legion of Honor

Isabelle is a young Jewish woman who has fled Paris following the arrest of her husband during the mass arrests of Jews in 1942. Marcel is a young man working against the Vichy government to hide Jews. Alternating chapters in this book that describe the events in these two French people's struggle against an evil government provide a moving portrayal of the serious decisions faced by many young civilians during the occupation of France.

(WCP) This comprehensive resource takes an integrated approach to teaching grammar in the context of reading and writing processes. It provides the theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning grammar, as well as listing the important grammar concepts to be taught for maximum benefit. Accompanied by practical mini-lessons and ready-to-use examples, the resource focuses on teaching grammar through conferences in the revision and editing stages of the writing process. It also includes chapters on the development of style, sentence combining, meeting the needs of ESL learners and the use of computers in the writing process. The resource is thoroughly referenced and contains both an author and subject index. Although the content is predominantly American, this does not detract from its usefulness in Canadian classrooms.

When her father is sent away as an Italian detainee during World War II, Rennie is dismayed by the community's change in attitude to her family. This easily read novel depicts the underlying racism that caused wartime hysteria to disrupt the lives of many Canadians who belonged to ethnic minorities.

(I/M) Our Strange One, or Crazy Horse as history has named him, was a shy, sensitive boy who grew up to lead his people in a futile struggle to save their hunting grounds and way of life. This is an easily read, eloquent biography describing his youth, incidents of his courage and idealism, the battles which he led, and the treachery that finally led to Crazy Horse's death in 1877. Included are numerous black and white reproductions of illustrations from the ledger book of Amos Bad Heart Bull. The book contains a table of contents, chronology, selective bibliography, and an index. This is an excellent resource.

(CAN) Commissioned by the British Columbia Teachers' Federation, this video uses interviews with teachers, students, and experts to discuss racism in schools. Topics dealt with include denial of racism, the harmful impact of stereotyping, inter-racial dating, the history of racism in British Columbia, racism in the media, and challenges to ESL students for whom language is an additional barrier.

The student anthology consists of a wide variety of written and visual texts by Canadian and international authors and producers representing a wide variety of cultures and voices. Many of the selections are Canadian, including some First Nations texts. The anthology consists of five units organized by genre. Each text selection is accompanied by a series of activities. A thematic index is included.

The teacher. s guide to the student anthology includes a lesson plan for each anthology selection, an alternative thematic index of selections and an appendix of assessment tools.

The video, which connects directly to the Media unit in the student anthology, includes seven segments: a documentary excerpt; a movie trailer; public service announcements, an investigative documentary, a music video, a political satire and an interview with author Timothy Findley.

The Lost Patrol: The Mounties' Yukon Tragedy

(CAN) This volume contains five previously published novels by Brian Doyle. The stories recount the adventures of different boys at different times between the 1890s and the 1950s in the Gatineau River and Ottawa area. The author succeeds in creating a strong sense of the feeling of what it is like to be young. His first-person narratives tell of larger-than-life characters and exaggerated incidents, but they always convey a strong sense of the truth of what it is like to be human and fallible. Students are sure to enjoy these funny, moving and highly readable stories.
