Set in 1592 in Carlyle, on the border between England and Scotland, this historical novel recounts the power struggle that results in Sir Robert Carey becoming the target of a murder investigation. As the newly appointed deputy warden, Carey puts his high-living past behind him as he strives to bring order and justice to a society in which privileged nobility prey upon the poor. As a result, Carey earns the respect of his aides and the love of a noble lady. This is a complex, challenging novel that contains earthy language. Its strengths lie in the book's depiction of Scottish discontent and of the oppression of women and the poor during this era in British history.

(I/M, SK) As a non-aboriginal writer, Kinsella manages to tell stories of aboriginal people in a witty manner. The three protagonists in Secret of the Northern Lights, Frank Fencepost, his pal Silas Ermineskin, and Mad Etta, the reserve. s ageless medicine woman reaffirm their identities through experience and storytelling. Some of the stories are happy, many are sad, but most are stories of how stereotypes hide more than they reveal. Teachers should be careful not to use these stories to stereotype aboriginal people.
