Module 13:Career Opportunities in Accounting (Core)

13.1              To summarize and describe briefly the possible professional designations in accounting. Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants {3042:9719} Forensic Accounting Demystified {1468:9539}

Discuss the professional accounting designations such as Certified General Accountant (CGA), Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), etc. as well as the difference between accountants, controllers, auditors, bookkeepers, accounting clerks, office clerks, etc.

The three main fields of accounting include:  public accounting, private accounting, and government accounting.  Under government accounting, discuss accounting for Indian Bands, providing a brief overview of Funds Accounting.

The Internet can be used to explore the sites for these organizations.  Resource people with the various designations are available to speak in the classroom.  (IL)

13.2              To develop a list of career opportunities related to the field of accounting.  (COM, IL)

Students may list the many different career opportunities in the professional, semi-professional, and skilled trade areas related to the field of accounting.  They should begin by listing all of the guest speakers who have made presentations throughout the course, then list workers within the field of accounting in the community.  Students are encouraged to use a variety of sources of information such as guidance counsellors, career software packages, personal interviews, and websites.

13.3              To explore opportunities that are available for training as an accountant.

Students should be aware that there are a number of avenues for acquiring training as an accountant, depending on the designation desired.  Students should investigate the opportunities that are offered as full time programs at universities, business schools, technical institutes such as SIAST.  They should also explore programs offered by the Certified General Accountants and the Certified Management Accountants which allow you to be employed in an accounting firm while studying part time through distance education to achieve designation as a CGA or CMA.

Students could interview a variety of people in the accounting profession to discuss the training they achieved and the advantages or disadvantages they see of each form of training.

13.4              To identify personal skills and interests that may lead to a career exploration.

Ask each student to create an inventory of favourite activities and interests.  Have students examine their lists to determine how these activities and interests might be job related.  This task of creating an interest inventory may be done using a variety of computer program software packages or the Internet.  Once students have determined areas of interest related to accounting, they should research the career using available resources in the library, community or Internet.  (PSVS)

13.5              To determine skills and interests that would enhance career choices.  (CCT)

Using the list created, students may select two choices of possible careers for further research. 

Investigate the career choices including:

·         description of work duties
·         personal qualities an individual must possess to succeed in the career
·         process to become certified within the career/trade
·         length of education and training
·         school locations
·         cost of education and up-grading
·         trends within the business or career
·         successes and challenges of the job
·         beginning salary
·         opportunities for advancement.

If a work study will be done, the student may investigate career links within the community for possible work study placement.  The student may interview the professional/tradesperson within the community as part of the career research.

A class presentation may be done by students, if time permits.
