Activity Three
This activity is to accompany Unit Five of the Curriculum Guide.

This concept application activity allows students to investigate how societies differ in the application of human rights to the members of their respective societies. The activity also allows students to further define what they consider to be basic and essential human rights.
Knowledge Objectives
The student will:
- know that human rights within a society are not always applied universally to all members or groups with the society;
- know that all societies impose certain restrictions on individual and group behaviours; and,
- know that powerful individuals/groups within a society will influence the restrictions that apply to behaviours within that society.
Skills Development
The student will:
- practise stating a proposition so that it applies to most or all cases;
- practise presenting an analysis of data to confirm or disconfirm a proposition by:
- describing and defining the main parts,
- describing cause-effect relationships, and
- showing how the parts are related to each other and to the whole;
- practise selecting and applying the abilities of;
- problem solving,
- dialectical thinking, and,
- conflict resolution to an issue.
Values Issues
The student will:
- discuss whether the a goal of the dominant society should be to have minority cultures within the larger society become fully integrated; and,
- discuss whether the maintenance of distinct cultures within a nation endangers the unity of the nation or strengthens the nation.
Outline of the Activity
Step One
Have students/groups research aspects of the situation facing South African Blacks such as:
- conditions on the homelands;
- laws that restrict the rights and activities of Blacks;
- participation in the economic and political decision making of the nation; and,
- political goals of the organizations representing South African Blacks.
