Student Information Sheet: The Spanish Civil War and its Political Consequences

In July of 1936, civil war broke out in Spain. The contest for power was between the leftist government and the Spanish military which had the support of anti-communists, the Catholic Church and large landowners.

Hitler and Mussolini sent equipment and troops to aid Franco's forces. Neither France nor Britain helped the republican government.

The inaction of the democracies to protect another democratically-elected government only encouraged the fascist dictators of Germany and Italy.
