Student Information Sheet: The Atlantic Charter (1941)

Key Principles

  1. No nation should seek to gain from its participation in the war.

  2. Any territorial adjustments can only occur if the people of that territory agree to the adjustments.

  3. All people have the right to choose the type of government they wish to have and to have any rights that have been deprived of, restored.

  4. All nations should have equal access to the world's trade and the world's raw materials which facilitate economic prosperity. (There should be free trade among all nations of the world.)

  5. There should be close collaboration among nations with the goals of improving labour standards, and living standards of the people.

  6. Following the destruction of Nazi Germany and its wartime allies, it is hoped that a permanent peace will follow which allows all people to live free from fear and want.

  7. The seas and oceans should be open for access and use by all nations.

  8. Nations must abandon the use of force to achieve goals and, therefore, the disarmament of nations is essential. Eventually, a permanent system for world-wide security will be established.
