Student Information Sheet: The Atlantic Charter (1941)
Key Principles
- No nation should seek to gain from its participation in the war.
- Any territorial adjustments can only occur if the people of that territory agree to the adjustments.
- All people have the right to choose the type of government they wish to have and to have any rights that have been deprived of, restored.
- All nations should have equal access to the world's trade and the world's raw materials which facilitate economic prosperity. (There should be free trade among all nations of the world.)
- There should be close collaboration among nations with the goals of improving labour standards, and living standards of the people.
- Following the destruction of Nazi Germany and its wartime allies, it is hoped that a permanent peace will follow which allows all people to live free from fear and want.
- The seas and oceans should be open for access and use by all nations.
- Nations must abandon the use of force to achieve goals and, therefore, the disarmament of nations is essential. Eventually, a permanent system for world-wide security will be established.
