Lesson Fifteen: Refining Students' Dance Compositions
Components: creative/productive

The Warm-up
Time: 5 minutes

  • respond spontaneously with or in reaction to others when improvising

  • In pairs, have students do a mirroring activity where one student leads and the other follows. Encourage students to travel as well as move on the spot. Next, have students do three different stretches of their own choice. End the warm-up with exercises for abdominal and upper-body strength.

    Refining the Dance Composition
    Time: 40 minutes

  • begin to understand the process of refining their dance compositions using ongoing reflection, decision-making and movement problem-solving

  • generate alternative solutions to problems (CEL: CCT)

  • Ask students to refine and finalize their dance compositions. Have students begin by reviewing the comments they recorded in their portfolios and trying some of the suggestions. Some groups might want to refer to the videotape of their dance composition. Circulate among the students, offering suggestions and encouragement.

    The Cool-down
    Time: 5 minutes

Ask students to take the last five minutes of the lesson to cool-down their bodies using slow, non-bouncing stretches. Tell students that they will be showing their dance compositions in the next lesson.

  • evaluate creative processes, assignments and projects (CEL: CCT)

  • Homework: Ask students to record individual reflections on a self-evaluation form. A sample self-evaluation form is included in the Evaluation section of this curriculum guide.
