Lesson Five: Responding to a Choreographer's Work
Components:
cultural/historical
critical/responsive
  • continue to perceive, describe, analyse, interpret and make informed judgments about dance presentations, using an increasingly appropriate vocabulary

  • begin to examine the ideas, concerns and purposes of dance for various dance artists and interpret dances based on the evidence seen in the work

  • provide reasons (arguments related to evidence) for answers, responses or choices (CEL: CCT)

  • Show students the dance "Full House" again. Guide students through the seven steps of "Responding to Dance Presentations" (found in this curriculum guide). To help students recall the dance, replay sections as needed. In their analysis, have students focus on how Laurin has used and developed movements seen in daily life. For Step Six: Background Information, show students excerpts of interviews with Laurin on the video.

Ask students to write a review of "Full House". Discuss the purpose of a review and what information could be included. Brainstorm a list and record it on the blackboard. The list might include ideas such as:

  • a description of the set, costumes, props and how they contributed to the piece
  • how sound or music was used and whether it suited the dance
  • whether the dance was visually interesting
  • comments about the cast of dancers
  • the choreographer's comments about the dance, if any
  • the reviewer's analysis and interpretation of the dance
  • the reviewer's informed judgment of the dance, including whether the choreographer succeeded in doing what he or she set out to do and whether the dance was worthwhile.
  • synthesize ideas gleaned from current reading with prior knowledge and understanding (CEL: C)

  • develop their own perspectives and give reasons for their positions
    (CEL: CCT)

  • identify the inspirations or starting-points for various choreographers' work

  • acquire information at one level, then apply that knowledge to explore other areas (CEL: IL)

  • Show an example of a review found in a newspaper or magazine such as Footnotes, published by Dance Saskatchewan. Have students analyse the review to see if it includes the ideas they listed on the blackboard. Were there ideas the students did not include?

Homework: Write a review of "Full House". The review should include some of the ideas suggested above.

Remind students they should have been observing gestures seen in daily life and recording them in dance journals. Inform students that they will be using their observations as inspiration for dance-making, similar to the way Laurin uses everyday movements.
