The students are
actually being asked to write
monologues in role
as parents or guardians of an adolescent. The quality of writing
which emerges from such writing in role inevitably displays an
unusual depth of feeling, imagination and understanding about the
situation and the students' roles in it. It also attests to the
students' belief in role.
