Arts Education - Drama

This is one example of how a guest actor can work in a drama. This person lives in a neighbouring community and is a member of the same community theatre group as the teacher. He and the teacher have prepared the "Lance" role by creating a sketchy background for the dome dweller and by anticipating questions that the students in role will pose. They know that they cannot anticipate all questions, so Lance must be prepared to think on his feet. This role is challenging because Lance must speak in an unusual enough way to ensure a clear contrast to the speech of the valley dwellers and the same time be certain that he is understood. As well, he must act as if some of what they say is also foreign to him. The teacher is prepared to set the tone for the valley dwellers' responses and will be able to facilitate the exchange between Lance and the valley dwellers from her role within the drama.
