  • identify and explore environmental, historical and social factors that influence visual artists and their work

  • begin to develop an understanding of how symbols and images are used by various artists to express ideas, feelings, social and political positions, etc.

  • Observe examples of artists using the skeleton in art works; for example, videos, tapes, posters, prints, warning labels, etc. The works tend to be morbid, frightening and often bizarre. Discuss some of the different images and purposes that artists have presented.

Ask the students to use the skeleton as a starting point for the development of an art work. Use a process such as "Transforming Ideas Into Visual Form" found in this curriculum to guide students in developing their ideas.
