The adaptation of instruction to meet learner needs is an expectation inherent in the Goals of Education of Saskatchewan and is an essential part of facilitating student learning. The Adaptive Dimension is defined as:
“making adjustments in approved educational programs to accommodate the diversity in student learning needs. It includes those practices the teacher undertakes to make curriculum, instruction, and the learning environment meaningful and appropriate for each student.” (The Adapative Dimension in Core Curriculum, Saskatchewan Education, 1992, page 1)
The Adaptive Dimension does not allow the changing or elimination of learning or foundational objectives. It does, however, support the use of a range of instructional and assessment approaches as well as the development of background context to address the needs of the students. The purpose of the Adaptive Dimension is to adapt curriculum topics and materials, instruction, and the learning environment in order to help students achieve curriculum objectives.
