Sample Speaking Continuum

See pages 124 and 125 for sample checklists developed from this continuum. It is anticipated that teachers will adapt these checklists and develop additional assessment forms to gather appropriate data regarding their students' needs and strengths.

__uses simple sentences to inform, make requests, and meet social and emotional needs
__asks questions frequently but isusually satisfied with simple answers
__describes simple events
__shares feelings and experiences
__speaks in complete sentences with some overgeneralizations (e.g., "goed" for went)
__uses all the basic sentence patterns and pronouns (average sentence length is 6.8 words)
__uses present, past, and future tenses
__pronounces sounds including m, n, ng, f, w, p, h, y, b, d, k, and the hard g as well as all vowel sounds (may mispronounce f, l, s, r, th)
__engages in imaginative play - talking to self and others
__creates stories about pictures and drawings
