Reading Strategies
Before Reading
__ I check print size and length of book for suitability.
__ I use the five-finger method to see if the book is right for me.
__ I think about the cover, the title, and what I know about the topic.
__ I ask questions.
__ I make predictions.
During Reading
__ I form a picture in my mind from what I am reading.
__ I imagine myself in the story or time that I am reading.
__ I predict and adjust my prediction or confirm it.
__ I raise questions (e.g., What will happen next? What has this told me?) and read on to discover answers.
__ I stop and retell to see what I remember. (I reread if necessary.)
__ I identify unfamiliar words and use context clues to figure out meanings, or I note the page the word is on.
__ I make connections from the text to my own life.
After Reading
__ I think about the events, characters, or information.
__ I discuss my reactions.
__ I reread to find support for responses or questions.
__ I reread parts that I enjoy.
__ I ask myself what the story was about or what I have learned.
