Introduction

Sample units have been prepared to model the various types of units, contexts, and strategies for the language arts. This section includes a sample unit for each grade, plus one multigrade unit.

Grade 1: All About Me

Grade 2: Friends and Friendships Grade 3: Folktales Grade 4: So Why Are You Laughing? Grade 5: Heroes A sample multi-grade interdisciplinary inquiry unit, Animals, Habitats, and Interdependence also has been included. In addition, developing author/genre study units for grades one to five is discussed on pages 481-483.

Each of the following sample units is planned for a particular period of time (typically 25 days); however, each unit may be adapted to suit the needs and interests of students. The focus of each unit is on the language arts objectives for the grade level. These sample units integrate listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing experiences and can serve as a model for planning the other language arts units for the year. Each sample unit gives students a context for using and learning specific language skills and strategies. Teachers will have to assess their students' needs in order to determine the appropriateness and emphasis for each of these objectives. In some cases, objectives from other areas of study have been included to demonstrate how classroom activities can help students achieve objectives from more than one area of study.

Throughout the sample units, appropriate Common Essential Learnings (C.E.L.s) are included to illustrate how they can be taught within the context of language arts. Teachers are reminded that many language arts objectives also help students achieve objectives related to the C.E.L.s. The following symbols are used to refer to the C.E.L.s:
