Description:

- This information could be collected with other parts of work and discussed and displayed.

Description:

G-15 - combine 2-D figures to make other figures

Description:

- Using pattern blocks or tangram puzzle pieces, each student will create an animal then trace its outline on a piece of paper.
- His/her partner will then solve the puzzle by covering it with puzzle pieces.

Adaptation:

- Students may use an already created animal to solve the puzzle or may simply create an animal.

Description:

Learning Objectives:

M-1 - solve a variety of problems involving length

Description:

- Using the worksheet provided, student finds the shortest distance between various animal displays at the zoo and records on recording sheet.
-Student creates own zoo and corresponding questions.

Activity:  7 - How big is 5000? Number of Students:  Pairs
Learning Objectives:

M-51  - estimate elapsed time in minutes
P-2    -solve problems using manipulatives

Description:

- Students estimate how long in minutes it would take to count up to 5000 using a calculator.
- Using a calculator and a clock, students count up to 100 or 500 then estimate from that result how long it would take to count to 5000.

Adaptation:

- Using a timer may alleviate the confusion of attending to so many things.

Activity:  8 - Pet Store Number of Students:  Pairs
Learning Objectives:

M-29 - solve a variety of problems relating to money
M-63 - use strategies to make change

Description:

- Teacher assigns specific prices to animals in make believe pet store. Teacher also assigns amount of money student has to spend.
- Students calculate and record which animal(s) they can buy and how much money they would have left over.
- What supplies would be needed?

Adaptation:

-Students can record as many options as they wish
- Prices and money to spend may be altered
