Introduction

The Curriculum Guide for Elementary Level Science presents both core and optional units at each grade level. The Guide defines and states the objectives for each unit. To support these units and the necessary lesson planning, this document correlates key print resources to the core and optional units, and lists other useful sources of information.

Full citations for the key resources can be found in Science: A Bibliography for the Elementary Level. That document also contains annotations on a wide selection of resource materials, and correlates those resources to the core and optional units for each grade level. Schools have copies of the Bibliography.

The contents of this document do not indicate what content must be covered. Nor does it restrict the choice of resources to among those listed. Rather, the resource suggestions listed here provide a pool of ideas upon which a creative, activity-based science program can be developed for each grade at the Elementary Level.

Kindergarten teachers are reminded that kindergarten is not a part of the Elementary Level, and thus units for the kindergarten level are not included in the Curriculum Guide. However, the Factors of Scientific Literacy chart and the key resources suitable for use in kindergarten are included in this Bulletin. Kindergarten teachers are encouraged to use these resources in the development of science units and activities for their students.
