Social Studies
Grade 1
Planning and Teaching the
Course
The teacher may choose to work through the units sequentially as
developed, or as follows:
- Portions of any unit may be taught within the context of
other units. For example, if you have a new student who
wears a turban, the teacher may want to immediately deal
with family traditions and culture.
- Significant events in the community, local circumstances,
and availability of resources may provide opportunities for
an alternative organization. For example, if there are
local elections in the fall and students appear to be
interested, the teacher may want to deal with portions of
Unit 4 at that time.
- Basic concepts of Unit 2 may be taught as a unit and then
specific celebrations, traditions, and holidays may be dealt
with when they occur.
- Integrating social studies with other subjects may require
an alternative organization.
