Social Studies Grade One
Learning at each grade level is organized around four units of study.
Unit 1 Identity Unit 3 Interdependence
Unit 2 Heritage Unit 4 Decision Making
This curriculum uses a spiral model for organizing learning objectives. With this
developmental model, concepts are introduced and developed within the context
of a theme and at a level appropriate for the students in the classroom. The unit
Identity is developed in the following way:
Students will learn about their own identity within the context of family
and the classroom. They will learn that each person and family has unique characteristics
that are of value and should be respected. They will learn that people are similar
and different in various ways.
They will practice mapping skills as they interpret and draw simple representations
of familiar areas like the classroom.
They will have the opportunity to participate in various activities that require
them to speak to others, to listen to one another, and to cooperate with one
another.
