Unit 3: Interdependence
Unit Overview for Grades 1-5
Learning at each grade level is organized around four units of study.

This curriculum uses a spiral model for organizing learning objectives. With this
developmental model, concepts are introduced and developed within the context
of a theme and at a level appropriate for the students in the classroom. The unit
"Interdependence" is developed in the following way:
Unit Summary for Grade Five
In this unit students will learn about the resources, industries, agriculture,
and economy of Canada and will begin to identify interdependent relationships
when resources are used for industry and agriculture to meet human needs and
wants.
Students will access a variety of informational materials, including maps
and graphs, and will organize and share information and ideas in a variety of
ways.

Suggestions for Integration
- Language Arts:
- Develop a theme such as "Meeting Needs and Wants in Canada" in the Inquiry
context.
A continuation of the mini theme "Other Ways To Learn" within the Literary
context could facilitate understandings about learning from videos, letters,
fax, telephone, pamphlets, people, and computers.
- Science:
- Core Unit: Resources, Optional Unit:
Machines and Work (industrial technology), Optional Unit:
Oceans (fishing industry).
Develop mini themes such as "Agriculture in Canada" and "Forestry in Canada"
in the Environmental context.
Student skills/abilities may be supported in all subjects.
