Field of Experience: The Second Language Classroom
Topic to be developed: Second Language Learning
Experientiel Goal: To create a wall display to be used as a reference for classroom expressions, questions, routines etc. that will be needed/used during school year.

Suggested Steps

1. Brainstorm the vocabulary needed.
2. Record the vocabulary on chart paper.
3. Determine which are routines, questions, expressions, etc.
4. Discuss groupings of expressions as a class to verify that the expressions have been placed in the proper group.
5. Print the expression on the paper provided. Prepare it for mounting on the wall.
6. Assemble display in a logical order.
7. Demonstrate how to use the wall display.

Teachers may wish to:

add to the Bulletin Board display as a new expression is introduced or as the need arises.
have an "expression of the week" and add to the Bulletin Board display.
Ÿ Greetings, introductions, alphabet, numbers, classroom objects may also be included in this unit.
Ÿ Students make their own personal dictionaries to use during the year where they can add expressions.
Ÿ Teachers may wish to use the evaluation of the curriculum to verify their role in the development of the unit.

Steps Activities Linguistic Content
1. Brainstorm the vocabulary needed.
1.1 Students will brainstorm any vocabulary that will be needed during the year that will help them in the second language classroom. The teacher may want to guide them as to necessary classroom expressions such as wanting to borrow a pencil, routines such as handing out scribblers, and questions such as wanting to go to the washroom or wanting to know how to say something in French.
 
2. Record the vocabulary on chart paper.
   
3. Determine which are routines, questions, expressions etc.
3.1 Each group of students will be given a heading, and from the chart will group the appropriate vocabulary for that area..
 
4. Discuss groupings of expressions as a class to verify that the expressions have been placed in the proper group.
   
5. Print the expression on the paper provided. Prepare it for mounting on the wall.
5.1 Each student will be assigned a particular expression.
5.2 The teacher may wish to use a particular shape for each expression. An idea is provided. AA1, AA2
5.3 Each student neatly prints in black marker their expression etc.. They may want to include a little drawing to provide a clue.
5.4 Students cut out the shape and prepare it for mounting on the wall.

7. Demonstrate how to use the wall to display.
Practice.
7.1 Short activities or simulations which give opportunities to use this new information may be used to demonstrate how to use the wall display and to provide for practise.
