Common Essential Learnings

The National Core French Study recognizes that culture and language are inseparable and, for that reason, included a culture syllabus in the multidimensional curriculum. Beginning to understand the cultures of Francophone peoples can begin very simply in the elementary grades by learning about festivals such as la Sainte-Catherine, la Fête des Rois, le Carnaval du Québec, le Festival du Voyageur and la Cabane à Sucre. An introduction to customs and foods that are particular to the way the French celebrate festivals that are common to Francophone cultures and our own (such as Christmas and Easter) will also help students understand that different cultural groups share some things but not others. (PSVS)

Note:

* "Les Fêtes" are optional units. Teachers and administrators should select the ones that are appropriate to their community.
* Any number of "Les Fêtes" can be done in any one year. The same Field of Experience may be chosen each year, however, teachers should choose a different topic to develop each year.
* "Les Fêtes" can be integrated into other Fields of Experience if and when it is appropriate.
