Unit 1.1b

Topic to be developed:	Me
Experiential Goal	Students make "All About Me" booklets.

Suggested Steps:
1.	Students can begin their booklets by printing the title (Moi) on the front either free hand, on computer, or with the help of the teacher. Covers could be laminated.
2.	The first page of the booklet may be a self-portrait.
3.	Display a large color wheel. Ask students to name the colors. What in the classroom is a certain color? Who is wearing a certain color?
4.	In their booklets, students compose a color page of their favorite color. They could display their favorite items or foods of the color, either drawn or cut out of magazines.
5.	Students could discuss their favorite foods, then compose, as a group, a menu for "The Best Meal Ever" (Le meilleur repas du monde).
6.	In their booklets, students could draw or cut out pictures of their favorite foods.
7.	Engage students in a discussion of their favorite things. Students could draw some of these in the next page of their booklets.
8.	Discuss things the students enjoy doing.
9.	Have the students draw pictures in their booklets of the things they enjoy doing "At School", "At Home", and "At Play".
10.	Display pictures of people displaying various facial expressions. Discuss feelings and when and why people feel certain emotions.
11.	Have the students add a "What Makes Me Happy" page in their booklets.
12.	Share and display the booklets.

This unit can be done along with the "All About Me" sample unit in the Language Arts Curriculum Guide. For a more detailed description of the unit refer to "All About Me Sample Unit", p. 199, English Language Arts: A Curriculum Guide for the Elementary Level, June 1992.

The Social Studies Curriculum Guide defines a family as follows:

a family is a group to which we belong
a family is the "world" one comes home to
the following are some characteristics of families:
families can
- share
- cooperate
- work together
- play together
- share responsibilites
- share values and goals
- share roles
- have problems
- work to solve problems
- have commitments to one another over time
have problems kids can't change
have problems kids can change
be cross-generalized
have traditions and rituals
come in all shapes and sizes
participate in spiritual life.

Have the students plan their own booklets (with the guidance of the teacher as necessary). They could submit a plan to the teacher briefly describing how it will be organized, what will be included and when it will be finished. They could also include the criteria on which the evaluation should be based.(IL)

Experiential Goal	Make a bulletin board of drawings of families.

Suggested Steps:
1.	Read "Les Trois Ours". A2 - A22
2.	Mime the story. A23 - A25
3.	Show pictures of different races, size and composition. (Exploration Series: Families are People and Families Share)
4.	Note briefly how they are different yet still constitute a family.
5.	Discuss families of some individual students.
	"Dans ma famille il y a ..." "Il y a quatre personnes dans ma famille: mon père..."
6.	Graph the number of people in families of several students (or families in stories). A25 - A28
7.	Draw a family on paper doing a favourite family activity or during a special family holiday.
8.	Present several drawings to the class.
9.	Prepare a bulletin board of all the families of the class.

Helping students become aware that families can take many forms and come in may sizes is a first step in helping them to be accepting of differences of all kinds. By modelling this acceptance towardss all students in the class, the teacher is also creating a supporting and caring environment which will foster learning. (PSVS)
The construction of a picture graph by the students will help them understand what a graph is, how it is made, what it represents and how to interpret the information it provides. the very "hands-on" and personal nature of this activity makes it suitable for young students. (NUM)
