Field of experience: Outdoor Living

Topic to be developed: Knowledge and attitudes toward outdoor activities.

Experiential Goal: The students will create posters to try to convince others to take part in an outdoor activity.

Suggested steps:

  1. Survey the students to determine which outdoor activities they have taken part in during the last year.
  2. Categorize the activities into the appropriate seasons.
  3. Survey the students to determine their favorite outdoor activity.
  4. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  5. Identify places in the home and community where one can practise these activities.
  6. Identify places in the province where one can practise these activities.
  7. Choose an activity and discuss the advantages, disadvantages, equipment necessary, cost involved, preparation, time element, etc.
  8. Discuss the reasons why some of these activities are so popular.
  9. Discuss activities that can be done in one's own community with little or no preparation.
  10. Discuss the benefits of participating in outdoor activities.
  11. Prepare and present the poster.
  12. Reflect on the unit. Which activities would you like to try? Which activities can be done near nearby?

Experiential Goal: Students will create unusual and nutritious party snacks.

Suggested steps:

  1. List the snacks that were served at the last party or gathering that the students attended.
  2. Categorize the snacks under the headings nutritious and non-nutritious.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Describe any unusual snack that the students have eaten and list the ingredients.
  5. Survey the students to see if they would or would not try the snacks.
  6. Choose ten foods from the nutritious column that are appealing to the students.
  7. Examine popular party foods and decide if they are healthy, have too much salt, too much sugar, too much fat, etc.
  8. Create three different combinations of foods and present to the class.
  9. Survey the class to see which combinations of foods are appealing to them.
  10. Choose the most popular snacks.
  11. Look at all of the criteria for preparing party snacks e.g. inexpensive, easy to prepare, easy to transport, attractive, appealing to the eye, ease of availability.
  12. If possible, bring snacks to class.
  13. Describe snacks to rest of class.
  14. Reflect on the unit. Will the students be more inclined to eat these nutritious snacks?Would they ever serve them at a party?

  4. Discuss possible situations between a waiter and a customer.
  5. Roleplay different ways of ordering a meal.
  6. Decide what types of food students would like to eat.
  7. List some of the do's and don'ts of restaurant behavior.
  8. Discuss the different types of restaurants and the foods they serve.
  9. Discuss modes of transportation to the restaurant.
  10. Discuss the amount of money needed to attend the restaurant.
  11. Determine what should be in a permission letter to the parents.
  12. Go to the restaurant.
  13. Reflect on the unit.

Experiential Goal: Students will create a pamphlet making recommendations for healthy eating habits

Suggested steps:

  1. Become familiar with breakfast foods.
  2. Categorize the breakfast foods into the different food groups.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Discuss the recommended minimum requirements from the Canada Food Guide.
  5. Identify the necessary components for a healthy diet.
  6. Survey students to determine their favorite healthy foods.
  7. Develop an innovative and healthy two day menu.
  8. Identify foods that contain excessive fat or "empty calories".
  9. Identify ways of eliminating fat and "empty calories" from the diet.
  10. Identify portable, quick-energy food snacks. e.g. raisins, peanuts
  11. Create a snack mixture e.g. peanuts, raisins, dried fruit.
  12. Determine the nutritive make-up of different foods and compare different foods for nutritious value.
  13. Discuss the benefits of healthy eating.
  14. Discuss what should be included in the healthy-eating pamphlet.
  15. Prepare the pamphlet.
  16. Present the pamphlet to the class.
  17. Reflect on the unit. Did students think of new and creative healthy foods?
    Did students learn about the nutritious and non-nutritious value of foods?
    What French did the students learn?

  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Become familiar with French cookbooks.
  5. Discuss food preferences of students.
  6. Discuss ingredients found in the recipes that are easily attained and not easily attained in our grocery stores.
  7. Look at a traditional French meal.
  8. Determine the customs of meal times in France, Quebec, etc.
  9. Compare cuisine of Quebec with cuisine of France.
  10. Choose a favorite French recipe.
  11. Determine what should be included on the poster.
  12. Design and present the poster.
  13. Reflect on the unit. What French foods have we been eating that we did not know originated in France or Quebec? What French foods would students like to try?
