Topic to be developed: Participating in sports

Experiential Goal: Students will conduct interviews to discover the sports interests of the class.

Suggested steps:

  1. List the sports that the students have participated in during the last year.
  2. Explain the goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  3. Categorize sports into team sports and individual sports.
  4. Categorize sports into seasonal and non-seasonal sports.
  5. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of playing a team sport.
  6. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of playing an individual sport.
  7. Discuss the cost of participating in particular sports.
  8. Decide which sports demand a lot of practice and skill.
  9. Decide which sports demand less practice and skill.
  10. Match personality types with sports.
  11. Name athletes that are associated with different sports.
  12. Develop interview questions regarding sports.
  13. Interview three people about their likes and dislikes regarding sports.
  14. Graph the results from the interviews.
  15. Reflect on the unit. What did the students learn about the sports played by theirclassmates. Were there any unusual sports?

Experiential Goal: Students will present one of their collections or a collection that they would like to begin.

Suggested steps:

  1. Identify the collections of the students, the teacher, etc.
  2. Survey other students, teachers and parents to see what types of collections they have. Graph the results
  3. Identify uncommon collections.
  4. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  5. Discuss the reasons why people have collections.
  6. Identify the different ways that people began their collections.
  7. Discuss the criteria for a good collection.
  8. Determine what is important in deciding what to collect.
  9. Discuss some of the advantages of having a collection.
  10. Describe the physical attributes of the collection.
  11. Look at the possibility of making an exchange with people who have the same collections.
  12. Make suggestions for those who wish to begin a collection.
  13. Prepare the presentations.
  14. Present to the class.
  15. Reflect on the unit. Did students learn about different collections? Would they be interested in beginning a new collection? Did they learn something about their own collections?

Suggested steps:

  1. Identify all of the clubs and associations at the school.
  2. Categorize the clubs and associations into academic, physical, sports, recreational, etc.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Discuss some of the steps involved in forming a club.
  5. Identify some of the characterisitics found in all clubs. (members, meeting times and places.)
  6. Decide what the focus of the French club will be.
  7. Discuss some of the possible activities for the club.
  8. Discuss ways of promoting the club. (posters, etc.)
  9. Develop a survey for prospective members including all of the criteria for the formation of a club.
  10. Look at the results of the survey.
  11. Plan the first meeting of the club.
  12. Reflect on the unit.
