Field of experience: Trips and excursions

Topic to be developed: Knowledge of places to visit.

Experiential goal: Students will create a bulletin board depicting what the province of Quebec has to offer for tourists.

Suggested steps: 

  1. Become familiar with friends and family who have visited the province of Quebec.
  2. Discuss the final task and the possible steps to achieve that task.
  3. Determine some of the reasons why people choose particular places to visit.
  4. Identify the regions or places that are familiar to the students.
  5. Become familiar with a map of Quebec.
  6. Research the number of tourists that vacation in Quebec.
  7. Identify some of the highlights and tourist attractions in Montreal and Quebec City.
  8. Become familiar with historical sites.
  9. Become familiar with a calendar of events for Montreal and Quebec City.
  10. Look at a map of La Ronde and discuss some of the attractions.
  11. Discuss the reasons that make Quebec City so attractive to tourists.
  12. Identify the sports teams and the complexes that attract tourists.
  13. Look at a hotel guide to see the prices of different types of hotels and what they have to offer.
  14. Identify some of the traditional dishes of Quebec.
  15. Identify some of the typical crafts that you can find in Quebec.
  16. Identify some of Quebec's natural resources.
  17. Divide the province into sections and discuss the attributes of each section.
  18. Discuss what should be included in the bulletin board display.
  19. Divide the bulletin board into sections with each group being responsible for a particular section.
  20. Present the bulletin board section.
  21. Reflect on the unit. What did you learn about Quebec? What are some of the customs or traditions that now overlap into other parts of Canada?

Topic to be developed: Planning a trip

Experiential Goal: Students will prepare and present an itinerary for a one week all expenses paid vacation.

Suggested steps:

  1. Become familiar with some of the places that the students have visited or would like to visit.
  2. Describe familiar vacation spots.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Become familiar with travel agency brochures and itineraries.
  5. Determine the criteria for choosing a place to visit.
  6. Become familiar with different modes of transportation.
  7. Identify and describe places of accommodation.
  8. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various accommodations.
  9. Discuss possible activities for the different locations.
  10. Discuss the types of food and restaurants available at the different vacation spots.
  11. Choosing from the restaurants, activities,
  12. etc, plan each day of the week.
  13. Study the plan to see if there are too many or not enough activities, if the activities are varied, and if sufficient rest time is provided.
  14. Present the plan to the group.
  15. Reflect on the unit. Would this exercise help in organizing a one week holiday?

Experiential Goal: Students will prepare a local travel directory, brochure or handbook for tourists describing their community.

Suggested steps:

  1. Become familiar with local attractions.
  2. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  3. Determine the basic needs of tourists and decide what would be available. e.g. bed and breakfast in rural areas, food availability, transportation.
  4. Discuss unique tourist attractions, e.g. a tour of a farm, walking tour of a town.
  5. Identify the public services available. e.g. police, doctor, hospital.
  6. Discuss availability and types of transportation.
  7. Create a calendar of events for the coming year.
  8. Determine the resources that the area has to offer. (including the people)
  9. Describe the sporting and recreational facilities available.
  10. Develop a map of the area including the attractions.
  11. Decide what should be included in the travel directory.
  12. Create the travel directory.
  13. Present the travel directory to the class.
  14. Reflect on the unit. Are students more aware of their own community?
