Field of experience: Conservation

Topic to be developed: Energy Conservation

Experiential Goal: Students will create and describe a poster depicting one or more ways to conserve energy.

Suggested steps:

  1. Identify the different types of energy required throughout the day. e.g. heating, fuel, etc.
  2. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  3. Discuss energy waste in the home.
  4. Discuss methods of conserving energy in the home.
  5. Determine the cost of one 100 watt light bulb burning for 24 hours (and other various mathematical problems).
  6. Discuss energy waste at school.
  7. Discuss ways of conserving energy at school.
  8. Calculate the savings when one practises energy conservation in reference to lights, water, heat.
  9. Discuss methods of conserving fuel for cars.
  10. Compare the amounts of gas used by different makes of cars.
  11. Calculate the amount of electricity used to plug in a car,90 days of the year for 12 hours per day.
  12. Identify new technological devices designed to save energy and resources.
  13. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of some of these energy saving ideas.
  14. Discuss what could be included on the poster.
  15. Create the poster.
  16. Present the poster to the class.
  17. Reflect on the unit. Is there some way that students will now be able to try to conserve energy. Did they learn something about energy conservation.?

Experiential Goal: The students will research or interview a famous or local sports celebrity and will summarize findings for a celebrity sports album.

Suggested steps:

  1. Become familiar with sports celebrities.
  2. Categorize favorite sports people into professional, amateur and local.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Examine different interview forms to determine the type of information required.
  5. Discuss the athlete's contributions to the sport.
  6. Discuss the athlete's contributions to society.
  7. Discuss the amount of training required to excel in a particular sport.
  8. Describe the necessary or common personality characteristics required for the particular sport.
  9. Describe the physical characteristics required for a person to excel in the sport.
  10. Predict the future of the athlete in the particular sport.
  11. Determine if the sport is played on a full-time or a part-time basis.
  12. Discuss the types of interview questions to be asked.
  13. Research or interview the athlete.
  14. Present the interview to the class.
  15. Summarize the interview or place the interview in its entirety in a class sports celebrity album.
  16. Reflect on the unit. What did the students learn about the athlete? What did the students learn about the sport? What new French phrases and vocabulary did they learn?

  2. Determine the popularity of sportscasts.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Become familiar with the sporting activities that students have recently attended.
  5. Describe the results of the most recent sporting activity at the school.
  6. Describe the key players of the game and their contributions.
  7. Discuss the placement of various teams in the different sports.
  8. Discuss the various responses of the crowd during a sporting activity..
  9. Discuss the effects of weather on the various sports.
  10. Choose a sporting event to attend and report on.
  11. Identify the technical terms used in the sport.
  12. Summarize the sporting event.
  13. Present the summary in the form of a newscast to the rest of the class.
  14. Reflect on the unit. Is it more difficult to watch a sporting event with the idea of reporting on it? Is the game appreciated more when the viewer is looking for specificthings? What French phrases and vocabulary were learned?
