Topic to be developed: Caring for one's body

Experiential Goal: Students will write and produce a television advertisement describing a brand new body-care product on the market.

Suggested steps:

  1. Become familiar with advertisements that pertain to body care.
  2. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve that goal.
  3. Study sample advertisements.
  4. Discuss what makes an impressive ad.
  5. Describe some of the body care products.
  6. Discuss body care products that students are familiar with.
  7. Become familiar with body care products that have retained their popularity. e.g. Dove soap.
  8. Become familiar with various hair care products.
  9. Determine the criteria used to choose a hair care or body care product.
  10. Create advertisement.
  11. Present advertisement to class.
  12. Reflect on the unit. What did the students learn about ads, about body care products.

Experiential goal: Students will produce a video that will convince others not to start smoking or to stop smoking.

Suggested steps:

  1. Become familiar with the difficulties of stopping smoking.
  2. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  3. Calculate the cost of one package of cigarettes smoked daily for one year.
  4. Discuss the many products that could be bought in exchange for one package of cigarettes per day.
  5. Discuss the physical side effects of smoking on the individual.
  6. Discuss the effects of smoking on individuals subjected to the smoke.
  7. Identify the possible problems of babies born to smoking mothers.
  8. Identify the places that will no longer allow people to smoke.
  9. Study statistics to determine percentages of groups that smoke.
  10. Identify the reasons that many people begin to smoke.
  11. Identify the many ways that people try to quit smoking.
  12. Discuss possible suggestions for those who wish to stop smoking.
  13. Prepare and present the video.
  14. Reflect on the unit.

Suggested steps:

  1. Survey students to determine if they know anyone who has an advertisement in the yellow pages of the phone directory.
  2. Determine the purpose of the Yellow Pages.
  3. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  4. Discuss the contents of a Yellow Pages directory.
  5. Identify the different types of trades and professions found in the directory.
  6. Discuss and compare the format of some of the different advertisements.
  7. Discuss the information required for an ad in the Yellow Pages.
  8. Compare different advertisements to see which is most effective?
  9. Determine the criteria for an effective advertisement.
  10. Identify the professions that do not have advertisements.
  11. Create the directory choosing from family members, acquaintances or recommendations of students in the class.
  12. Present the directory to the class.
  13. Compare the different directories to determine who may need what information.
  14. Create a class directory (a compilation of allmaterial in all of the students' directories.)
  15. Reflect on the unit. Are students more aware of the different trades and professions in their communities? Do the students know each other and their families better? Did the students learn the value of the Yellow Pages?

  2. Discuss the experiential goal and the possible steps to achieve the goal.
  3. Identify the many different types of artists in the community.
    Musicians, singers, craftsman, painters, sculptors, writers, etc.
  4. Discuss the types of questions that could be asked in an interview.
  5. Become familar with the profile of a sample artist.
  6. Invite the artists to visit the class and explain their talents.
  7. Discuss the criteria involved in being a full-time and part-time artist.
  8. Identify the places where the local artists and their works can be located.
  9. Identify the ways that the talents and products of the artists are marketed.
  10. Compare some of the different art pieces of the different artists.
  11. Discuss the kinds of information that could be included on the album page.
  12. Choose the local artist and prepare the album page.
  13. Present the album page to the class.
  14. Reflect on the unit. Are there more local artists than was previously thought?
