Foreword

In May, 1981, the Minister of Education established a Curriculum and Instruction Review Committee to conduct the first major review of education since 1963. The result was a final report called Directions, presented to the Minister in December, 1983, that recommended a new set of educational goals and a K-12 program policy for Saskatchewan schools.

Core Curriculum reinforces basic skills and introduces new skills on a K-12 continuum. The major components of Core are Required Areas of Study and Common Essential Learnings. In addition, provisions are made for the Adaptive Dimension and Locally-Determined Options. Core Curriculum also provides opportunities for choice or electives.

Business Education courses are classified as electives at the Middle Level and the Secondary Level. At the Elementary Level, course content may be integrated into Required Areas of Study or used as a locally-determined option.
