Sample Themes

A setting which
incorporates signs,
pictures, posters,
decorations and materials
reflecting a wide variety
of cultures
will convey
a multicultural
orientation
and will
reaffirm a respect
for cultural
similarity and diversity.
This in turn
will foster
a feeling of
comfort and belonging.

Sample Themes

The freedom to develop themes of choice is an aspect of the Saskatchewan Kindergarten curriculum that most teachers cherish. This flexibility allows educators to plan according to the unique needs and interests of their communities. For example, a class in Northern Saskatchewan might be participating in a theme on fishing while a Southern Saskatchewan class is focusing on grain farming.

This section of the Kindergarten curriculum provides general information on theme building and assessing student learning when you work within the context of a theme. The section also includes two model themes of study--"Modes of Transportation" and "Spring". These models are intended to illustrate how a theme can be used to guide learning in many different aspects of the Kindergarten program.
