Effective implementation of a new course of study necessitates administrative commitment and support. To enable administrators to play an active role in curriculum implementation, information and assistance must be provided.
The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to assist administrators in the implementation of Grade 6 Social Studies.
Background
In 1981 Saskatchewan Education established the Social Studies Task Force which began the process of comprehensive curriculum development. In October, 1982 the Minister of Education formed a Social Sciences Reference Committee. The committee developed a plan of action based on the recommendations of the Task Force to give specific direction to the planned course revisions. The Committee defined what the fundamentals of social studies education would be. Canada and Its Atlantic Neighbours is the fourth of a series of social studies curriculum guides to be developed.
Rationale for Course Change
The new Grade 6 course, a study of Canada and selected Atlantic countries, is designed to be a companion course to the new Grade 7 course, a study of Canada and Pacific Rim countries. Both of the courses replace the old Western/Eastern Hemisphere courses.
This course is designed within a context of Grades 1 to 12 concepts, content, skills/abilities, and values. It is consistent with the objectives of Core Curriculum, and incorporates the Common Essential Learnings, Indian and Metis content, gender equity, and other Saskatchewan Education initiatives.
