Integrating Social Studies With Other Subjects
The curriculum is designed so that teachers will have many opportunities to teach Social Studies in an integrated way. For example there are opportunities for integration with Language Arts - from reading expository text to writing stories. There are a number of opportunities for aesthetic expression - from creating images to participating in contextual drama. Virtually all the units in Science deal with some of the concepts also dealt with in Social Studies. The skills and abilities as identified in Social Studies are consistent with those in other curricula. The introductory section of each unit gives teachers more specific guidelines for integration that they may find useful in planning their programs.
Maintenance
In part, Saskatchewan Education plans to maintain the curriculum for Social Studies 6 through information provided in the Textbooks Circular (to be called Key Curriculum Resource Materials). Other support will come through Core Curriculum initiatives involving school divisions.
Curriculum Evaluation
The Social Studies course will be evaluated as part of the curriculum development cycle.
