Advanced Standing - to recognize learning at a previous or lower level of instruction and to provide the student the opportunity to enter into a subsequent course or program of study at an advanced level.
Articulation - to provide formal recognition for a period of learning or for the knowledge, skills and abilities acquired during a period of learning as appropriate to or as part of a subsequent course or program of studies; to provide recognition of a course or program of study as appropriate learning to be acquired prior to acceptance into a subsequent course or program of study. See PLAR.
BTEC - Board of Teacher Education and Certification.
Career – the combined total of all the events in a person’s life from the time he/she is born, including education, work, family, leisure activities and more.
Certification - to provide a recognized credential for a particular qualification or series of learnings (e.g., a certified teacher).
CIAC - Curriculum and Instruction Advisory Committee, the main Advisory Committee for curriculum development in Saskatchewan.
Cluster - a group of related occupations within a particular career grouping (e.g., all of the occupations included within the tourism and hospitality industry) ranging from entry level to professional occupations.
Course - a series of learnings grouped together into a sequence of related foundational and learning objectives designed to assist students in acquiring a specific set of knowledge, skills and abilities and involving a combination of content, processes, and products.
Credit - an achievement awarded for successful completion of a course or program of studies that indicates that the learner has acquired the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined by the foundational and learning objectives of the curriculum; to provide recognition for a series of learnings, a period of time, or the mastery of a set of skills (e.g., time credit is recorded for individuals registered as apprentices in a designated trade and must be accrued to meet certain industry standards prior to moving on to the next level or training).
Evergreening - the process of updating, renewing, and sustaining Saskatchewan K-12 curricula on a 6-12 year cycle. One aspect of evergreening is putting curricula on-line on the Saskatchewan Learning Website that includes links (hyperlinks) to evaluated Websites.
Expert Group - a group of individuals (members of a particular STF special subject council) identified by their peers as experts in a particular area of study who provide advice and consultation as an ad hoc committee established to assist in curriculum development in the PAA.
Field Test - the testing of draft PAA curricular objectives, modules or guides by professional teachers and by school divisions, in classrooms across the province; the field testing period varied from project to project and ranged from days or weeks to a full semester.
Module - a unit within a PAA curriculum guide; the configuration of modules will be flexible so as to allow local decision-making in the determination of which modules will be combined/configured to create courses to meet the unique and individual needs of students within a particular school or community.
Pilot - the testing of a course of study as part of the design phase as utilized in curriculum development in the Required Areas of Study within Core Curriculum; generally a period of two to three years duration; piloting involves the testing of an entire curriculum by grade or Level (Elementary, Middle, Secondary) in a large number of schools (often 20 or more) across the province.
PLAR - Prior Learning Assessment Recognition. A mechanism to recognize and give credit for prior learning is being explored at all levels of education and training. See articulation. This mechanism is also known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Pure Course - core and optional modules selected from a PAA course at one grade level to total 100 hours (1.0 credit) at the secondary level.
Survey Course – a course consisting of modules from various PAA curricula to total 100 hours (1.0 credit) at the secondary level and at least 50 hours at the middle level.
Transfer Credit - to provide credit at two levels or within two programs at the same time (e.g., to provide high school graduation credit at the Secondary Level and to provide credit within a recognized course or program of studies at the post-secondary level for the same course period or set of learnings).
Transition-to-Work Dimensions - ten aspects (concepts, skills, and approaches) integrated into the PAA curricula supporting career development and school to work transition.
