Aim
The aim of the Housing 30 is to allow students to explore the field of housing and gain an appreciation of housing in Saskatchewan and other parts of the world. Throughout the course students will gain knowledge about making real estate purchases, insuring a home, securing rental property, reading house plans, landscaping and landscaping design, and in community planning.
Goals
Consumer Knowledge: To develop a knowledge of housing so that students can make informed consumer decisions related to housing purchases and accommodation.
Awareness: To create an awareness of the many housing styles available today and to develop an appreciation for the heritage property in many Saskatchewan communities.
Technological Advances: To gain an understanding of the changes in housing that can be attributed to technological advances.
Careers and Employment: To create an awareness of the careers and opportunities in the field of housing which exist in Saskatchewan and other provinces.
Independence: To foster independent decision-making related to housing as they move toward adulthood.
Environmental Awareness: To develop an awareness of the global impact of housing decisions on the environment.
Philosophy and Rationale
Housing 30 is designed to give a broad understanding and appreciation of housing in Saskatchewan and in other parts of the world. An understanding of individual housing needs and how these needs can be met now and in the future as we move forward into the new millennium is addressed throughout the course. Examination of various living accommodation in the Saskatchewan and in other parts of the world enables the student to draw comparisons and determine the housing solution which is best for the area in which they live. Traces of Saskatchewan heritage will be discovered in architectural styles as students seek to gain appreciation of the building structures in the area in which they live.
Housing 30 offers a breadth of career information as career links and opportunities are possible throughout the course with use of videos, guest speakers, and career development research.

Course Components and Considerations
The new Housing 30 course may be offered in a variety of learning environments that range from a classroom in a school to workplace setting. The Housing 30 curriculum may be offered as a 100 hour full credit course including an optional 25 hours work study module and 75 hours of in class instruction. The work study component will be determined by arrangement with the employer, student and teacher monitor. Students may explore housing-related careers within their community such as community planner, carpenter, architect, draftsman, real estate agent, insurance sales, landscaping and maintenance, electrician, energy conservation consultant, floor/window installation, lightning consultant, building construction, home maintenance service, etc.
Professionals in the field of housing have had input into the development of the curriculum through interviews and consultation. The work study component permits the student to apply academic and school-based learning to workplace settings. Students are provided with the opportunity to experience this component working with a professional in suitable places within the community. The work study may include time spent with a tradesperson in building construction, an architect, landscape designer, an engineer, urban planner, draftsperson, real estate sales, home inspection and appraisal, surveyors, home furnishing retail sales, yard maintenance etc.
These courses are Practical and Applied Arts options that are specified electives at the secondary level.
