Learning Objectives

Notes

15.1   To design and create properties for a particular play. (TL, NUM)

Discuss the following:

  • demands of the play
  • limitations of budget
  • believability
  • practicality.

Design and create props for the banquet scene with Banquo's ghost in Macbeth.

In preparing this assignment, consider productions that are currently being developed in the school or in community-based groups. Students could develop properties that may be used in such productions. In this manner the properties will be used as a working function of the show. The care and management of properties could also be examined in the context of a running show.

Consult the Construction, Carpentry Curriculum Guidelines.

Concepts:

  • borrowing, transforming, and creating
  • making and taking inventory
  • handling donations: care, return, and acknowledgement
  • meeting other demands of the play
  • organizing: prop tables, template(s), storage
  • maintaining and repairing props
  • delivering and returning props to and from actors
  • stating emphatically: "Don't play with the props!"
  • taking pre- and post-production responsibility.

Prepare a plan for the acquisition and operation of props for one act of: The Diary of Anne Frank or The Miracle Worker.
