Review and discuss:

  • duties
  • traffic flow
  • emergency evacuation procedures (e.g., fire exits, emergency restrictions)
  • ticket collection and programme distribution
  • concession policy
  • house rules: training the audience
  • public relations and trouble-shooting
  • audience calls
  • starting on time
  • communication with the stage manager.

Students may interview community theatre house managers in order to understand fully the practical requirements of this position. If it is feasible, the students may volunteer as ushers in order to assist the house manager and front-of-house personnel.

19.2   To create a house manager's handbook for the school's theatre facility.

Consider the following:

  • seating
  • house rules
  • emergency and evacuation procedures
  • audience calls communication.
