Common Essential Learnings Foundational Objectives

  Learning Objective Notes
The knots are introduced in this module. The practice and application of these skills should be integrated in the projects when appropriate.
11.1 To understand the purpose of knots in upholstery. (COM) Create a list of locations where knots are used in upholstery.
11.2 To be able to identify the type of knots and situations where they are used. (TL) Construct a knot-tying example board.
11.3 To practise tying the different knots. (IL, TL)

The students will tie the different types of knots. A lab activity should be done on a jute web base and involve a set of coil springs. An old seat back or seat that has been recycled is good for this.

A macramé book or a book on upholstery knots will provide good examples and methods.

Practise tying the following knots:
  • slip knot
  • twist knot
  • clove hitch
  • clove spring knot
  • overhand knot
  • simple loop
  • weaves knot/sheep bend
  • half hitch
  • lashing spring knot/running knot
  • lock loop.
